About Medicare

Medicare is a national health insurance program that helps U.S. citizens and permanent legal residents obtain affordable, high-quality health care.

How Medicare Works

You can apply for Medicare Part A and Part B starting 90 days before the first day of the month you turn 65.

Medicare (parts A and B) covers 80% of your medical costs:

  • Part A covers hospital stays.
  • Part B covers doctor visits and other outpatient care.

It might take up to 45 days to get your Medicare card after you apply through the Social Security Administration. Don’t wait until the last minute.

If you qualify for Medicare, Part A is usually free if you worked 40 quarters or ten years. Part B has a monthly cost, which depends on your income.

Social Security and Medicare, both run by the Social Security Administration, are two separate programs that require separate enrollments.

Most sign up for Medicare when they turn 65. However, many wait until age 67 — when they are fully eligible or beyond — to start collecting Social Security benefits.

Jeff Evins, a licensed Medicare agent, can help you with the biggest choice in Medicare: How to pay for the 20% of health care costs that Medicare doesn’t cover. Your main options are Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) or a Medicare Supplement plan (also called Medigap).

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C, is a private insurance alternative to traditional Medicare. Medicare patients usually need to see a primary care doctor who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage allows participants to visit any provider in the network if they accept Medicare.

Medicare Advantage combines Part A (hospital), Part B (medical) and sometimes Part D (prescription drugs) into a simple plan. This can simplify enrollment and could reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Jeff Evins, a licensed Medicare agent, can walk you through the options and help you decide on the best plan for you.

Medicare Supplements, also known as Medigap policies, are private insurance plans that help pay for out-of-pocket costs that Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t cover — including copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. A prescription drug plan (Part D) can be purchased at the same time.

Medicare Supplement plans have a monthly fee but have no co-payments when you visit a healthcare provider. You are not limited to a network. You can visit any provider as long as they accept Medicare.

Jeff Evins, a licensed Medicare agent, can help you create a benefits package that meets your needs.
